Rebecca's Journey is more than just a story—it’s a journey, one that took me more than 10 years to write. But why did I write it?

I was a victim throughout my childhood, my teens, and deep into adulthood. I kept repeating the cycle—until an old man spoke a simple truth that changed everything: I had the power to free myself.

It took me five years to prepare for the moment I could finally leave. And even once I was physically free, it took another ten years to free my mind, to break the invisible chains that kept me trapped in fear and self-doubt.

During those ten years, I wrote Rebecca’s Journey. At first, I wanted to tell my story, but I was terrified of being identified. Terrified my abuser would hear of it and call me a liar. So I wrote about bears instead of people, hiding behind the safety of fiction and a pen name.

But as I wrote, I healed. And as I healed, the story changed. It stopped being a tale of suffering and became a story of recovery—of reclaiming my life and rediscovering my sense of self. With healing came courage. The fear faded, and I found the strength to publish this story under my own name.

Rebecca’s journey mirrors my own, but it’s not just my story. It’s the story of every person who has ever been abused, manipulated, or bullied. Each event in the book represents a stage of healing, a step towards freedom.

Rebecca’s name is the perfect acronym for the seven steps of healing she—and every survivor—must go through:

R-E-B-E-C-C-A

RECOGNISE the trap – Rebecca’s dream of the Great Spirit Bear makes her realize she is imprisoned not just by Joe, but by the lies he’s made her believe.

EDUCATE yourself – Rebecca regains her strength and prepares for the moment to escape.

BREAK FREE – When the opportunity comes, she takes it—but nearly turns back because of Joe’s hold on her mind.

ESTABLISH your power – Rebecca fights the wolf and discovers her own strength.

CLEAR your conscience – She struggles to forgive herself for Lucy’s suffering.

CANCEL the debt – She learns that true freedom means living free, not just escaping.

ACCEPT the battle – Healing is lifelong. There will always be demons to slay, but she now knows how to fight them.

Lucy is Rebecca’s reason to keep going. And her name carries its own message:

LOVE yourself – Reclaim your worth.

UNDERSTAND your trauma – Acknowledge what you’ve suffered.

COMPLETE your healing – Seek help if you need it.

YOU matter – You are more than what you have endured.

This book is not just Rebecca’s journey—it is yours, too. A reminder that no matter how deep the darkness, there is always a way forward. Always a way to freedom.
